TO DRINK OR NOT TO DRINK: SPORTS DRINKS

Often containing as much sugar as a can of soda, sports drinks may not necessarily be as healthy a choice as you’d think. Then again, after a tough workout, you do need to replenish the energy you put out. This week The Institute of Manhood answers the question: Are sports drinks worth it?

Pro:

Pioneered by Gatorade, sports drinks are founded on the principle of restoring all the essential electrolytes lost during intense exercise. And there’s no doubt they do that. A typical serving of Gatorade contains 110mg of sodium and 30mg of potassium.

Con:

While they’re packed with essential electrolytes (and oftentimes extra vitamins and minerals), they’re also packed with sugar-14 grams of sugar in an 8-ounce serving. Take into account that a typical bottle is 20 ounces and most guys down the whole thing in a sitting (when was the last time you slugged just 8 ounces after a workout?) and that’s a lot of sugar that could offset the work you just put into your fitness routine.

The Verdict:

Opt for low-calorie iterations of your favorite sports drinks (Gatorade’s G2 or Vitamin Water Zero). They still come loaded with the electrolytes to quench your thirst without the added sugar.  Better yet, just drink a glass of water and eat a banana.  Good ole natural fuel.
