Otherwise, don’t. That’s always been my mantra and the mantra of The Institute of Manhood. While it doesn’t seem all that profound, you’d be surprised how many dudes can’t pick out a proper shirt for their skin tone and body type.

You can have a mad shoe game or a nice fitted pair of pants, but if your t-shirt is off the whole look is off. That three pack of jersey shirts is no longer cutting it. The t-shirt is the focal point of the outfit as it covers up the most real estate on the body. So, as the weather warms for spring and summer the t-shirt becomes ever more important, and you can take advantage of wearing t-shirts to more social situations.

The Three Stack Theory

I believe every man should have three stacks of t-shirts to pull from.

  • Ones to workout in and ones used for shit work around the house. When your new shirts become old you can cycle them into this stack.
  • Nice dress T-s to wear under a suit coat or a sweater.
  • Weekend and casual wear. These are the ones that you’d wear on the weekend, or in casual situations. You can get away with being a little more animated here. Avoid shirts with clever sayings, this is not Jersey Shore.

There are so many great options; whether you buy a licensed Calvin Klein branded shirt or my favorite, a James Perse.

Maintaining The Fresh T

It’s important to always fold and neaten your shirts. I recommend doing this every time you do laundry or every 5 to 6 weeks. It’s really just a nice tactic to re-evaluate your clothing situation. You can see what you have and what goes together. This makes clearing out the old easier.

Iron and Fold

If you can get in the habit of not throwing T-s in dryer, let them dry naturally on hangers and iron the nicer ones, so your T-s will look new longer. An added option would be to throw them in the dryer for a bit and then press or tumble dry.

V-Neck vs. The Crew

V-neck t-shirts have come back in popularity in recent years. There are variations on the v-neck where they’re cut lower and some hug the sides of the body. This option can be a nice chance to show off your physique. If you aren’t as fit these days then you might want to be, avoid the tight v-neck T. A nice weight v-neck shirt can be dressed up with slacks for the warmer months.

Crew cut shirts are pretty basic, just make sure it fits right. I have never been a fan of long shirts. If it’s a long shirt it should be tucked in otherwise it can hang out. Don’t let the t-shirt wear you, the perfect t-shirt fits appropriately and accentuates your physique.

Going Retro

This is most always a righteous move. Looking to give new life to that shirt you’ve been hanging onto since the Dead show of ‘89? If it still fits, more power to you, brother! It’s cool to pull out shirts from the past as styles and trends always make a circle around. Don’t have a packrat mentality? No problem, visit a secondhand boutique or vintage store and do some digging.

The Long Sleeve

Throw this option in as a reminder that the long sleeve can add great variation to a wardrobe. It can add layers of color or texture to the mix. If you throw a pattern T on top then make sure you keep the long sleeve a solid color. You can go online to https://imprint.com/shop/custom-apparel/t-shirts/long-sleeve-t-shirts and see how you can get your own custom long-sleeved shirt that is right for you.

Getting the most out of your T requires a little bit of effort on your part. Finding brands that fit your body type will make the process go smoother, at the same time we always suggest having fun experimenting. Remember, a t-shirt can be sexy and even summertime dressy.
