HOW TO TAN

You’ve just arrived at the pool, beach or the fun nest party of the summer. When you look around you notice all sorts of people tanning, there is the body builder who looks like he has spent time in a machine as his orange complexion gives him away while he cooks like barbeque chicken. Then you have the girls who have been out the there for at least 72 hours strait, you can usually tell as their face looks like the leather from your couch. Of course there is always that poor bastard who should be wearing an SPF 1 million, because at this point he looks like a steamed lobster, need I say more.

If you are planning on spending anytime outside tanning, you have to understand one thing, when it comes to you vs. the sun, the sun always wins. The question is how do you make the sun work to your advantage, without having to watch the rest of your vacation, pool day and summer from the window of your room, because you are too burned and itchy to be in public.

  • You vs. Sun- there is absolutely no way on earth that you can actually tan without any risk. The sun has so many amazing benefits, but improving our skin and the conditions of it is not one of them.

  • Skin cancer can unfortunately materialize on anyone’s skin. When you begin to see premature symbols of aging, like wrinkles, sagging skin, sunspots or discoloration, its time to step back and approach tanning and being outside in a different light.

  • There are those of us that think, getting those painful sunburns is the price for looking good, malarkey. Those painful sunburns now have worse side effects then ever.

So what are the right steps in getting the proper tan, no matter how dark your complexion, take the following precautions.

article-tan-1

1. Sun Screen (Face)

30 minutes prior to going outside, apply a zinc-based sunscreen on your face. Make sure to use sunscreen that is designed for your face, an all over body sunscreen is not suitable for the face.

2. Sun Screen (Body)

apply anywhere from an SPF 15 to 30 to your body, 30 minutes before going out in the sun. Make sure you give the product enough time to set in. That first exposure that you are subjected to is the most important, it’s very important to set the ground rules with the sun and let him know that you are protected.

3. Tan SPF

no matter how much SPF you apply, you are still going to tan, and the sun is so strong that you will tan under your umbrella. You may think   that extra color on your face will make you look so much more healthy and better. Sure, but a tan only lasts so long, the damage will last your entire your life.

4. Waterproof

if you are wearing lotion that is water resistant, you must understand that the water washes it off, after your body is dry reapply.

5. Re-apply

A good rule of thumb is to reapply sunscreen at least every ninety minutes. Your skin absorbs liquids or lotions faster then you think, especially under the heat of the sun.

6. Take your time and give yourself time

Less is more and this applies to tanning. Do not stay out there for over 6 hours, especially if you started before or during the peak time, which everyone has a different view on, some say from 10 to 4, or 10 to 2. I was always told to be careful from 11 to 2pm. I always try to sit under the umbrella from 10 to 2, and then afterwards, I start my exposure.

7. Maintenance and keeping that Tan

Always, always, always… did I mention always?, moisturize after you have been out in the sun. There are some great after sun creams on the market, but I always stick to a quality all over body moisturizer and a targeted one for my face.  Hydration will help extend the quality and quantity of time your tan will last and it also averts you from peeling.

Oils – there are some tanning accelerating oils, I recommend using those types of oils only if you have an olive dark completion, which has already had at least 20 days of semi consistent exposure to the sun. A great place to start is your feet and slowly work your way up. Ordinarily I wouldn’t even share or recommend this option, but there are people who are going to do it anyways. What happened when people would tell you don’t smoke or drink, you smoked and drank.

If you approach tanning using a gradual method, you will see that like anything else that the best things in life take time, don’t make up for 5 months of winter in one sitting.
