We need to be mindful of how we are raising the next generation. The early years are crucial for creating a foundation of values for the little guy to learn and grow with. It’s your job to teach your son how to be a gentleman—not merely a man. You can break down the basics with the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated.

 

1. Respect women

The best way to do that is to set an example by treating your wife with kindness. Show appreciation by opening the car door for her, walking alongside her when you’re out on the town. Remember that you’re teaching him how to treat his wife—and all women.

 

2. Courtesy starts at home

Good manners aren’t reserved for “important people” or only out in public. Everyone deserves to be treated well and that includes family. Use “please” and “thank you” and don’t snap with impatience when things don’t go your way. You’re teaching your son how to treat his family.

 

3. Dining etiquette is important

In addition to the basics, teach him to wait for everyone to be seated before starting to eat and not to leave the table while others are still eating. If leaving the table during the meal, there’s a proper way to excuse oneself. Practicing good dining skills will help him in any future social or business situations.

 

4. It’s a sign of strength to be kind
