How To Deal With Ingrown Toenails

The absolute worst toe pain has to be the ingrown toenail. It’s painful and extremely inconvenient. So when you get one, you should know how to deal with it fast. Here are a few tips:

  • Ingrown nails occur when the nail grows straight into the skin along the edges of your toe. You’ll experience pain, redness, and possibly pus. When there’s pus, there’s probably an infection.

  • The most common cause is improperly cut toenails. Cut your nails straight across and not above the flesh line. Curving them or going below that line might lead to an ingrown nail.

  • Don’t wear tight shoes that bunch your toes together.

  • If it’s red and painful you can usually treat it yourself at home. Soak it in warm water a couple times a day and keep it clean. Then, gently lift the nail and place a small wadded ball of floss under the nail. This’ll help guide the nail to grow over your skin. Replace the floss once a day after soaking it and things should start feeling better after a week.

  • If you live near the beach, soak your feet in sea salt or epsom salt.

  • You can use an infection preventing ointment like an anti-fungal ointment.

  • If there’s pus, you should take a trip to the podiatrist so they can properly assess the situation and decide if surgically removing the nail is necessary. Don’t worry, it grows back.

 PRZ TIP:

When you’re cutting your toenails, be careful around the section that’s ingrown. Cut it straight. Be careful with the part near the edges because the corners are what grow into the skin. Give it air.
