08 Sep HEALTHY(ER) LATE NIGHT CRAVES
How many times have you gotten off of the couch, which has molded nicely to the contours of your body, and ventured into the kitchen in a midnight haze? We know this nightly game of hope and despair a little too well. White light scatters from the outer edges of the towering fridge and you open the door to peek at the contents within. You’re gravely disappointed, expecting to find something new, but alas, you’re no longer living in mom’s basement and the contents of the fridge are but an empty shell. Hollow remains with battle scars of soy sauce, and if you’re lucky, your fridge has a box of lo mein noodles and a few cheap beers.
There are a few easy items you can stock your fridge to satisfy the late night munchies:
1. Greek Yogurt
We spin this one into a new orbit by adding frozen blueberries and vanilla protein powder to the mix. It’s a healthier alternative to ice cream, plus you get your daily dose of protein. Add honey or maple syrup as needed.
2. Frozen Grapes
This one does require a little forethought. After unloading your groceries, rinse them off and put in the freezer. Promise it’s completely worth the very little effort you put into it.
3. Edamame
A dash of garlic powder and a flick of sea salt, nuke ‘em for a few minutes and you have a fantastic late night crave. Edamame still in their shell make for fun when eating and also slow you down so you eat less.
4. Grape Leaves
These will open new worlds if you’ve never had one. Known as Dolmas in the Mediterranean, this finger food is stuffed with tomato, eggplant, and plenty of garlic.
5. Gluten-Free Brownies
This one might be a stretch but at least you can tell your friends that you’re getting all “new age” up in your house.
