Cleaning Out Your Medicine Cabinet

Long gone are the days when the average man’s grooming arsenal took up only a sad corner of the shower caddy, and drugstore staples of a $1 bar of soap and a bottle of 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner were all he needed.

Modern men across the globe have majorly pumped up their hair and skin care routines recently. But how much product is too much? If every time you open your medicine cabinet you risk an avalanche of waxes, gels, mousse, oils, creams, scrubs and masks, chances are you’ve got too much stuff in there.

Grooming, much like life, is all about balance. So let’s get your medicine cabinet in check.

1. Empty your cabinet completely

A literal fresh start. Wipe down each shelf well and don’t forget the corners where dust bunnies hang.

2. Check the expiration dates for all prescriptions and over-the-counter products

When OTC products, like sunscreen, reach their expiration dates their chemical compounds being to break down, making for a pretty heinous cocktail. Also take this time to rid yourself of any half finished prescriptions – everything from antibiotics to painkillers – you might be saving for a rainy day. Check the DEA website for instructions on how to safely dispose of your medications.

3. Use common sense with cosmetic products

With cosmetic products the risk is real. Not only do expired products begin to break down chemically, they become breeding grounds for bacteria and microorganisms that cause rashes and blemishes, as well as skin and eye infections. Gnarly right? Most cosmetics don’t have expiration dates since the FDA doesn’t require them, but like everything else in this world they too cannot last forever. If a product has become discolored, runny or lumpy, smells different or feels different when applied, it’s time to toss it.

4. Toss out the superfluous

We’ve made it to the hardest part. This is where you look at yourself in the mirror and confront your deepest, darkest, hoarding tendencies. It’s alright, we’ve been there too. It’s important to identify the staple products you use day in and out. These are the ones you keep. Everything else, especially if you haven’t touched it in more than three months, should be tossed. Now you’re down to the essentials, so you can begin to mix in new products every now and then.

Keep in mind that the best products only enhance your natural assets. They don’t provide anything you don’t already posses. While some grooming brands make promises, no one product is going to make you look like Cristiano Ronaldo (bummer, we know). So don’t shop to fill a void. Shop for great products that bring out the best in you. All PRZMAN products are pure, simple, and made from the finest ingredients nature has to offer.

5. Get organized

Go crazy at The Container Store. There are magnets for little metal tools like scissors and clippers, jars for cotton balls and Q-tips to save room (buy in bulk but keep the extras stashed away), caddies for holding your toothbrushes and other essentials, and first aid kits for keeping your Band-Aids and other medical supplies together. Make sure to keep the products you use most frequently displayed prominently for easy access.

How much better do you feel now? You can finally see that you alone hold the keys to your grooming destiny.
