ARE LIFE COACHES WORTH IT?

Life coaches seem like a desperate last choice for many people. After all, aren’t most coaches supposed to stand on the sidelines, yell at you, and give rousing speeches at halftime? But they’ve only become more popular over the past few years and more and more people are turning to them for help. So what is a life coach and is one right for you?

The first thing you need to know is that life coaches aren’t therapists. The goal of a life coach is to help you move on to a better future that you desire. A therapist on the other hand works to heal the past. They deal with problems that need diagnosing and fixing. A life coach will work with you on your problems and improve your lifestyle moving forward.

This leads into the second fact about life coaches: they aren’t regulated. There is no official governing board overlooking all life coaches. Life coaching doesn’t fall under any regulation and while ther are several associations of life coaches offering certification, there isn’t any mandatory training or education required.

So what exactly does a life coach do? Like any sport coach, a life coach is there to guide and help you with whatever you need. They do this through a variety of ways. They can listen, mentor or teach you, offer advice, counsel, or motivate you. A life coach is there to help you achieve goals and keep you on track.

“Things do not have meaning. We assign meaning to everything.”
– Tony Robbins

Whether it’s changing or starting a new career, time management, spiritual growth, or just bettering your life in general, a life coach can be the extra push you’ve needed.
Then comes the not-fun part of having a life coach, paying them.

Having a life coach isn’t cheap. Sessions can cost you hundreds of dollars an hour and there’s no telling how long you’ll need a coach. Which means before you sink a lot of money into a life coach, you’ll want to make you sure two gel. Be sure to get at least two references before hiring a coach and ask lots of questions. Ask what kind of success past clients have had, what other experiences they have, whether they’re accredited or not. Make sure you two communicate well as that’s key to any relationship with a coach.

But do coaches work? Well that’s the tricky part. Coaches can’t make your life better. That’s up to you. Hiring a coach is a good first step to improving your life and shows that you have the courage to at least admit in needing help. But ultimately it’s up to you to do all the hard work. A life coach is a guide, a tool. They’re not a crutch.

  • So where do you find one? There is a database of coaches credentialed by the International Coach Federation atwww.coachfederation.org.

  • Are life coaches worth it? It truly depends on what your situation is and whether or not you’re willing to do the work to change it. Have you ever consulted a life coach? What was your experience like?
