6 WAYS TO GET BETTER SLEEP

Let’s face it. We all could use some more sleep. Even an extra hour or two a night can make a dramatic difference in how you look and feel the next day. But sometimes you just can’t put your head down and doze off. Here are some of the most reliable sleep aids out there, from proven home remedies to heavy-hitting prescriptions.

Mom’s tricks:

Warm Milk

The warm milk gives your brain the illusion of a full stomach and stifles any hunger pangs that might keep you stirring late into the night. Milk also contains tryptophan-rich proteins (the same stuff found in turkey that conks you out).

Chamomile Tea

Clinically proven to be a depressant, chamomile relaxes the nerves that we spend all day winding up. It’s also been known to help settle the stomach, so it will suppress any gurgles that once kept you up through the night.

Grown-up remedies:

Red Wine

Let us make this clear, just one glass. Like chamomile, the depressant properties of the alcohol unwind your nerves and let you relax, while the grapes in some reds contain melatonin, which also helps put you to sleep. Just don’t drink too much, or you will wake up halfway through the night.

Weed

While we can’t condone taking unless you’re one of the lucky few carrying a medicinal marijuana license, know that the notorious stress relieving properties of bud make for a good sleep aid.

Drugs (the legal ones):

Benadryl

Maybe better known for making you drowsy than actually helping with allergies, Benadryl is one of the best over-the-counter cures for the sleep deprived. A standard dose can put you in a hazy enough state to bring some much needed shuteye.

Ambien

Crazy side effects be damned, you’re tired! Kicking in within 15 minutes after dosage, this stuff will knock you out, if not keep you fully asleep. Sleepwalking is a common side effect.

While all of these sleep aids are effective, we like to rely on popping in Star Wars: Episode II when we need to nod off fast.
